What makes an open education program sustainable? The case of Connexions

ABSTRACT
The past five years have witnessed the emergence of a growing movement of concerned educators and scientists who aim to open up access to the world's knowledge resources. Inspired by parallel developments in the open source software world such as the Linux operating system and the Apache web server, this Open Education movement seeks to provide free access to quality teaching materials that can be customized and personalized to match local contexts (language, level, users' educational goals, etc.). Furthermore, the Open Education movement seeks to empower and link local educators within a global knowledge community that can benefit and efficiently propagate educational content.| Keywords | collaboration · information technology · OER creation · open source software |
