ABSTRACT
UBC recently published a report on the design and delivery of its initial MOOC pilot. UBC delivered its first five MOOCs on the Coursera platform during the spring and summer of 2013. The open courses provided thousands of learners worldwide, including over 8,100 students who earned certificates for completing the courses, with an opportunity to engage with UBC instructors and learning materials. Learning materials from the MOOCs have also been used by UBC students in credit-bearing courses. Additionally, instructors made efforts to facilitate the reuse of their learning materials through the use of Creative Commons licenses and the transferring of content to additional platforms beyond Courser, such as external YouTube channels. The MOOC pilot provided UBC with an opportunity to gain experience with MOOCs in the company of peer institutions, and in a fashion that allowed UBC to make a contribution to a growing international movement towards open access to educational materials. Keywords | Coursera · MOOC course design · MOOC development and delivery cost · MOOC · pilot project |
