This is a complex and rich theme, especially with respect to the impact of new technologies. To better understand the incorporation of digital technologies in the classroom, the previous promises are discussed: the false expectations, as well as the successes and achievements of the last century’s “digital technologies” older cousins, such as movies, radio and television. The discussion embraces an important characteristic of technology-based education in general, where the learner is at the centre of the learning process, allowing him or her to have some input into the content and sequence of the learning process, and thus more independence and greater control over it. The importance of innovation in contemporary society, and the available new technologies which can be used in education are discussed, and the complex but relevant notion of independent learning is introduced.does not apply10.1016/B978-0-12-800847-8.00005-3http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/B9780128008478000053http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/B9780128008478000053
